Joep Breuer
Joep accelerates the energy transition with a strong focus on ecology. He draws on TNO’s broad expertise to connect a wide range of stakeholders. Driven by a passion for innovation, he explores new technological possibilities that help solve complex challenges and move us towards a more sustainable future.
Together with the ecology team within the wind energy department, Joep leverages TNO’s extensive sensor expertise to monitor the movements of birds and bats around turbines. Using models, the team assesses the impact of wind farms on aerofauna and bats, and develops effective mitigation strategies.
By combining ecological insight with knowledge of the wind industry and the wider energy system, they are able to carefully balance these strategies within both ecological and economic frameworks — without the two needing to be at odds. We do this in close collaboration with ecologists from research institutes, universities and consultancies, and in partnership with startups, companies and public authorities, to ensure the rollout of wind energy takes place within ecological boundaries.
