Working with applied quantum technologies

Heralded as a breakthrough technology, with unforeseeable applications on all market sectors and contribution to almost all sustainable goals, quantum technology is a booming domain of activities. While it once was contained to the realm of scientific and academic research, more and more industrial applications are seeing the light of day and a number of companies are joining the ecosystem. At the heart of this innovation tumbler TNO is playing a coordinating role, linking the many ongoing research activities to applications in the market.

History of quantum technology

Activities on Applied Quantum Technologies in The Netherlands have decades of heritage thanks to the leading position of the TU Delft on this front. In 2015, the QuTech collaboration was started, coupling the university with TNO to further advance the Technology Readiness Level. This provided a springboard of innovation, generating a number of startup companies as well as allowing further consolidation of our efforts by writing the National Agenda for Quantum Technology.

This agenda aimed at gathering all Dutch activities on the topic and channel all efforts to position The Netherlands at the forefront of European Quantum activities. The Agenda was received extremely positively by the government which granted it with a 630 M EUR growth fund in 2021 to fulfill its objectives.

TNO Quantum growth fund to accelerate quantum technologies 

Considering this growth, TNO has a key role to play as orchestrator of innovation. Specifically, in the context of the quantum growth fund, TNO is active on three major fronts:

  • The development of a demonstrator for quantum computing (Quantum Inspire) that harness the efforts TNO has lead for the last 5 years within QuTech and connect to other Dutch and international efforts on Q computing
  • The development and deployment of a Quantum Internet infrastructure, in collaboration with our Dutch and international partners
  • The build-up of a quantum sensing test bed infrastructure to accelerate the time to market of the sensing application being developed in research labs across the Netherlands

In addition to these key projects, TNO has four main tasks to support Small and Medium Enterprises that are developing in this nascent ecosystem by supporting their R&D efforts and providing them with innovative solutions. With the growth of the ecosystem, this specific role of TNO is becoming more and more prominent.
