Fatigue researcher steel structures
Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Fatigue researcher steel structures at TNO in Delft!
What will be your role?
Introduction
Keeping Dutch infrastructure safe and affordable. Want to contribute? Read on. A large part of Dutch civil infrastructure is nearing the end of its lifespan, which comes with very high replacement costs. Managing these costs is essential for our society to be able to plan the necessary actions and keep annual investments affordable. As a researcher at TNO, you contribute to the optimal utilization of Dutch infrastructure.
What will be your role?
As a researcher, you will predict the fatigue behavior of existing and new steel structures to ensure and maintain structural safety. You’ll focus on various types of structures such as (movable) bridges, transportation pipelines, (offshore) wind turbines, and water-retaining structures. Working alongside top experts, you’ll develop methods to accurately predict the (remaining) lifespan of these structures. Your work may involve analytical methods, numerical models, or experiments conducted in the Delft Building Innovation Lab or on site.
You’ll also contribute to the valorization/publication of new knowledge, including its integration into normative frameworks.
Example research questions you may help answer:
- What is the current reliability of the largest steel bridges?
- How do weld defects affect the structural performance of existing bridges?
- How can we quickly determine the reliability of steel bridges in provinces and municipalities?
- What measures can extend the lifespan of offshore wind turbines?
- Can the existing gas pipelines network be repurposed for new forms of energy supply?
Your team
You’ll join the Steel Team, part of the Reliable Structures expertise group at TNO. This team includes around 15 researchers and 2 project leaders. Collegiality, safety, involvement, and dedication are central to the culture.
You’ll collaborate with colleagues to address questions from infrastructure managers and regularly meet with clients to clarify research questions or present results. Project team sizes vary depending on complexity and scope, and you’ll work with a range of specialists.
What we expect from you
Within project teams, you’ll actively contribute to research and solution development using analytical methods, numerical models, or experiments. You may conduct measurements at viaducts or bridges, or simulate loads in our unique laboratories. You’ll analyze data, build models, interpretate results, compile clear reports, and see your results directly influence client advice.
You’ll work on several projects simultaneously, independently and autonomously. You have a solid knowledge base and a naturally curious mindset. You enjoy learning and developing yourself--both professionally and personally. Your analytical skills enable you to ask the right questions and approach challenges with insight. You enjoy collaborating with colleagues and external partners to achieve shared goals.
Your profile:
- Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical engineering, or similar.
- Interest in fatigue of steel and strong mechanical insight/behavior of structures.
- Experience modelling structural behavior of steel structures (e.g. Abaqus, Ansys) in a company or research setting.
- Affinity with civil construction works.
- Data analysis skills (e.g. Python, Matlab, MathCad).
- Curious and eager to learn.
- Strong command of English and willingness to achieve Dutch (B1 level) within one year.
