Software System Engineer

About this position

Develop software to predict the performance of the latest sonar systems? Plan and evaluate operations with underwater drones? Join TNO as a software engineer.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, the geopolitical situation has become more unpredictable than ever and requires rapid innovation. TNO plays a key role as a knowledge institute for Defence & Security, with more than a thousand specialists working on national and European security.

The Acoustics and Underwater Warfare division brings together acoustic expertise and mainly works for the Royal Netherlands Navy. The Underwater Operations & Seabed Security department focuses on research into autonomous underwater systems, for example for mine detection using drones, anti-submarine warfare and protection of critical infrastructure. We develop advanced acoustic sensors and data processing for situational awareness, and model performance against underwater threats under different conditions.

What will be your role?

As a Software System Engineer, you work in multiple research and development projects to develop solutions for our clients. You collaborate with highly motivated software engineers and scientists. Where needed, you take the lead in designing and developing software tools. No two projects are the same, so there are plenty of opportunities to further develop yourself.

Your activities include:

  • Developing software for demonstrators at sea to validate new technologies.
  • Leading (sub)teams of software engineers and participating as a team member in projects.
  • Consulting with scientists to translate their ideas into demonstrators.
  • Writing software documentation and test reports.
  • Stimulating collaboration with colleagues.

If you believe you can help us further develop in these areas and are looking for a role that contributes to society, offers variety, and challenges you as a scientist, then this is the right place for you.
