Sustainable mobility

Substantial innovation in mobility is needed to ensure strong earning power for Dutch business, for a better living environment, and to achieve climate goals in 2030 and 2050. The Innovation Centre for Sustainable Powertrains (ICSP) is a development and testing facility for innovation in the powertrains of trucks, ships, generator sets, and agricultural equipment.

Which powertrains?

We have more than 40 years’ experience with combustion engines and exhaust gas aftertreatment. In recent years, development has shifted from fossil fuels to fuels with a green origin. The main focus is currently on fuels such as hydrogen, methanol, and ammonia.

At the ICSP, we are also conducting research into battery-electric powertrains and fuel cells. We are mainly looking at how these can be used for mobility, rather than developing batteries and fuel cells themselves.

What we do at the ICSP

Our combustion engine projects concentrate on engine conversion. This involves modifying existing engine platforms to run on new fuels. We make physical adjustments to the engine, underpinned by theory. We also carry out retrofits – modifications of operational engine platforms. These are mainly aimed at engines with a long service life.

Furthermore, the ICSP is accredited as the Technical Services department of the Netherlands Vehicle Authority (Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer, RDW) and thereby authorised to perform emission certification tests for road-going vehicles.

Our battery and fuel cell projects at the ICSP are focused on extension of the service life of batteries and fuel cells and their use for mobility.
