Network Engineer - The Hague/Hybrid - 32-40

Want to make your mark on our time? Come work as a Network Engineer at TNO in The Hague!

About this position

Working at TNO means contributing to research and innovative solutions that make a real difference. From accelerating the energy transition and enabling the safe use of AI in healthcare to shaping the future of digital identity and strengthening our security, TNO develops technologies that matter.

As a Network Engineer, your challenge is to manage and maintain the complex network infrastructure that supports more than 4,500 TNO employees across 20 locations throughout the Netherlands. You have a keen eye for detail, a strong focus on security, and the ability to coordinate activities across multiple stakeholders and technologies. In this role, you help ensure that researchers and professionals can rely on a secure, high-performing, and future-proof network environment every day.

What will be your role?

As a Network Engineer, you are responsible for ensuring the availability, performance, and security of TNO's network infrastructure. You will work with enterprise-grade networking technologies and play a key role in maintaining and continuously improving the network services used throughout the organisation.

Because TNO conducts extensive technology research for the Dutch Ministry of Defence and other strategic partners, the secure availability of our networks is critical not only for TNO, but also for society. You will therefore contribute directly to a resilient and secure digital infrastructure.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring optimal network performance, availability, and system security.
  • Performing performance measurements, monitoring activities, and trend analyses.
  • Implementing system modifications and improvements where required.
  • Managing and administering infrastructure changes.
  • Advising stakeholders on the urgency, impact, and priority of proposed changes.
  • Keeping up to date with the latest networking technologies and industry developments.
  • Developing ideas and initiatives to further improve the quality of IT services.
  • Maintaining operational relationships with hardware and software vendors.

The team

As a Network Engineer, you will become part of TNO's Infrastructure Team. This team is responsible for the organisation's data centres, storage environments, network infrastructure, Linux and Windows server platforms, and the foundational configuration of client systems. #LI-Hybrid

In addition, the team manages IaaS and PaaS cloud services and their integration with on-premises environments. The team primarily operates from TNO's New Babylon office in The Hague and also supports locations across the central and southern regions of the Netherlands. Hybrid working is standard practice within the team.

What we expect from you

To be successful in this role, you are technically strong, customer-focused, and continuously looking for ways to improve and automate infrastructure management. You enjoy solving complex technical challenges and collaborating with colleagues in a highly professional environment.

You also bring:

  • A Bachelor's degree level of working and thinking.
  • Preferably demonstrable experience as a LAN/WAN Network Engineer in a relevant enterprise environment.
  • Proven experience with Cisco, Palo Alto, F5, and Infoblox technologies.
  • The ability to optimise and automate operational management tasks.
  • A flexible, customer-oriented, and service-minded attitude.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good command of both Dutch and English, written and spoken.
  • A valid Category B driving licence.

What you'll get in return

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave plus a flexible holiday that can be used on a cultural, religious, or otherwise important day of your choosing (on a full-time basis).
  • An employer working towards a respectful, inclusive, and equitable work environment where every employee can flourish, with various initiatives such as Jong TNO, numerous expertise based guilds, Rainbow Community and Round Tables on diverse inclusion topics.
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 or 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • A good pension scheme.
