Infrastructure in the Netherlands
The Dutch infrastructure consists of (rail) roads and structures, such as locks, bridges and tunnels. This infrastructure carries our society and economy. While the existing infrastructure is obsolete, its use is increasingly intensive.
Infrastructure managers spend approximately €6 billion a year on maintaining the existing infrastructure. The condition of and load on the infrastructure form the basis for well-considered decisions on repairs, renovations and replacements. TNO is working on technologies to assess the existing infrastructure in the Netherlands and to optimise maintenance and replacement.

MONITORING AND TRAFFIC LOAD
Monitoring of structures, roads and railways helps to determine the current condition. Using the measurement data as input for a predictive model provides more accurate insight into the future condition and residual lifespan. Improved condition forecasting saves on costs and prevents traffic disruption without compromising safety.

TNO conducts research and innovation in the field of water, tunnel and structural safety as well as research into the actual traffic load of structures.
TNO is committed to sustainable infrastructure:
- using methods to establish the environmental performance of roads and structures,
- developing innovations for roads and concrete,
- developing solutions that identify or reduce noise and vibration nuisance.
