Offshore wind energy is growing enormously, but this growth comes with challenges. To maximise the value of large volumes of wind energy in the future energy system, we need to ensure feasible business cases for developers. There are many variables involved in investing in wind farms. Not only will more energy be generated in future. New combinations of solar and wind farms, as well expanding collaboration with industry players connecting the wind with conversion and storage options, are also at play.

Business case offshore wind

TNO provides insights and recommendations to achieve a profitable offshore wind business under 2 scenarios by 2030 using TNO’s European power market and dispatching business models. These scenarios represent the Dutch electricity system under a low and high electrification growth respectively, following current national and European policies for supply and demand.

Programme Webinar:

Challenges offshore wind energy

Jan Willem Wagenaar, Program Manager Wind Energy (TNO), will reflect on the challenges of system integration for offshore wind energy.

Energy islands for conversion, transport, and storage

Part of the future of wind energy are energy hubs at sea. TNO researches generation, storage and distribution of energy between countries.

Safe and flexible integration and monitoring of wind farms in a hybrid energy system

TNO is working on getting wind farms, solar farms, electrolysis units and battery systems to integrate as one sustainable hybrid power plant.

Required infrastructure to integrate offshore wind into the energy system

The strong growth of wind at sea means that more and more wind energy has to be fed into the energy system. TNO is investigating what infrastructure is needed for this.

Maximising the value of wind energy in the future energy mix

The playing field for wind energy is about to change. TNO investigates how the value of wind energy can be maximised.

Wind energy system integration

TNO researches the system integration of wind energy. How do you transport and convert wind energy and how do you store it?
