Virtualisation Engineer - The Hague/Hybrid

About this position

What will be your role?

As an Azure Cloud & Virtualisation Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining and managing TNO's Microsoft Windows and virtualisation environments while supporting the transition of existing workloads to the Microsoft Azure cloud.

Working closely with the Agile Cloud team, you will help design Azure solutions and develop migration strategies for moving applications and infrastructure to Azure. You will contribute to building landing zones and implementing cloud solutions using Infrastructure as Code and modern automation tooling. At the same time, you will support the ongoing development of TNO's VMware virtualisation platform and assist in migrating on-premises environments to Azure IaaS and PaaS services. #LI-Hybrid

You will also help improve service quality, operational processes, and platform maturity while ensuring compliance with security and governance requirements.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Designing, implementing, and maintaining Azure cloud environments.
  • Configuring and managing landing zones within Microsoft Azure.
  • Automating infrastructure deployments using Infrastructure as Code, Policy as Code, ARM templates, PowerShell, Bicep and/or Terraform.
  • Managing and maintaining VMware virtualisation platforms.
  • Installing, configuring, and supporting hardware, system software, and standard applications related to the VMware infrastructure.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving hardware, software, and infrastructure incidents.
  • Managing and administering changes to system configurations.
  • Advising stakeholders on the urgency, impact, and priority of infrastructure changes.
  • Conducting root cause analyses and resolving complex incidents and problems.
  • Collaborating with Solution Architects to implement and maintain management tooling and documentation.
  • Developing initiatives to further improve the quality of IT services.
  • Monitoring platform capacity, performance, availability, and security.
  • Managing operational relationships with hardware and software vendors.
  • Reporting on the status of systems within scope regarding ISO 27001 compliance and controls.

The team

As a Virtualisation Engineer, you will join TNO's ICT Infrastructure department, which is responsible for delivering reliable, secure, and future-proof IT services across the organisation. Our mission is to remain relevant to our internal customers through operational excellence and a uniform service concept. ICT services are delivered according to ITIL 4 principles, while our teams work in an Agile environment focused on value creation. In this role, you will become part of a virtual Agile team consisting of professionals responsible for both the development and management of our platforms. You will play a key role in maintaining and continuously improving TNO's virtualisation and cloud environments, directly contributing to the stability, performance, and security of critical business systems.

What we expect from you

To be successful in this role, you combine strong technical expertise with a proactive and collaborative mindset. You enjoy working in an Agile environment and take ownership of maintaining highly available and secure infrastructure platforms.

You also bring:

  • A Bachelor's degree level of working and thinking, preferably in ICT, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in infrastructure, virtualisation, and cloud environments.
  • Strong knowledge of and hands-on experience with recent versions of VMware and Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience managing virtualised and cloud-based IT infrastructures based on VMware ESXi and Azure.
  • Experience working in Agile teams and methodologies.
  • Experience working according to ITIL 4 principles and processes.
  • Willingness to work outside standard office hours when required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in both Dutch and English.
  • A valid Category B driving licence, as TNO operates data centres at multiple locations.

The selection process

Please apply before the 25th of October 2026. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.

The selection process may include an online assessment and a reference check.
