
Medior Quantum Scientist
About this position
Within TNO's Quantum Technology department, you will work on projects for clients such as quantum start-ups, European consortia, and partners within the Delft quantum ecosystem.
Our mission is to translate groundbreaking scientific knowledge into practical technologies at higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). We design and build systems that exploit quantum mechanical properties and help bring fundamental research closer to real-world applications through testbeds, demonstrators, and product development.
What will be your role?
In this role, you will work closely with TNO colleagues and researchers/engineers from quantum technology start-ups to develop the next generation of quantum devices. The projects you contribute to are primarily focused on testing quantum devices or developing the high-tech systems required for these applications.
You are the specialist who understands quantum devices and knows how the installations required to cool and control them operate, enabling reliable measurements to be performed. Part of your work involves managing a dilution fridge and its associated technical infrastructure, which allows users to characterize quantum devices. You have expertise in cryogenic engineering and electrical systems, including both RF and digital electronics, ensuring that the complete measurement setup operates optimally and robustly.
You identify which parts of the setup can be improved and are capable of developing, or overseeing the development of, the necessary software, PCBs, and hardware. For each project, you analyze measurement results and translate the outcomes into insights on how individual system components contribute to overall performance. Using your technical expertise, you solve problems before they cause delays and directly contribute to the development of the next generation of quantum devices.
You work close to both the technology and its application, ranging from cryogenic measurement setups and device characterization to collaboration with start-ups, universities, and high-tech companies. You will have the freedom to shape technical solutions, develop new measurement and automation methods, and make a visible contribution to the growth of the quantum technology ecosystem in Delft.
What we expect from you
Technical skills and expertise
- A Master's degree or PhD in (Applied) Physics or Electrical Engineering, and at least 3 years of professional experience in the high-tech industry;
- Experience setting up and maintaining cryogenic systems for testing quantum devices;
- Experience performing measurements on superconductors and quantum devices;
- Experience with scientific modelling of RF systems;
- Experience designing and testing packaging PCBs;
- Strong proficiency in Python;
- Experience collaborating with, or a strong affinity for working with, colleagues from different disciplines;
- Preferred: hands-on experience with measurements on superconducting qubits and/or silicon spin qubits.

The selection process
Please apply before the 11 October. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place on the 19 October. The second interview round has been scheduled for the 26 October. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
The selection process may include an online assessment and a reference check.
A certificate of Conduct (VOG) is required before starting a new job at TNO.
