DevOps/Platform Engineer - Utrecht

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a DevOps/Platform Engineer at TNO in Utrecht!

About this position

You are a mid to senior level DevOps Engineer. You are comfortable taking ownership and making independent decisions.

You communicate clearly, stay structured under pressure and take initiative. You are proactive and continuously improve both yourself and your environment.

What will be your role?

You’ll work from home and from our Utrecht office, managing and continuously improving GDN’s infrastructure and supporting applications.

As a DevOps Engineer, you will:

  • Act as the link between the development teams and the platform team.
  • Work independently on solutions and take ownership of your area.
  • Ensure a robust, secure and scalable infrastructure.
  • Translate needs and requirements into practical technical solutions.
  • Develop and improve CI/CD and GitOps processes using tools such as ArgoCD and GitHub Actions.
  • Support development teams in using platform tools and pipelines.
  • Ensure documentation is clear and up to date.

Your day-to-day work includes:

  • Taking part in stand-ups and collaborating within Scrum and DevOps teams.
  • Handling and prioritising incidents and service requests in Jira.
  • Monitoring performance, availability and security.
  • Managing the lifecycle of systems and applications.
  • Contributing to projects such as Machine Learning platforms in Azure and on-premises environments.

Your team

You’ll be part of the Platform Team within the Geo IT department, which consists of around fourteen colleagues with different areas of expertise, including storage, databases, security and architecture.

Because the team is relatively small:

  • You’ll have a broad scope of responsibilities.
  • You’ll have your own area of expertise while also contributing beyond your specialism.
  • Everyone is expected to contribute ideas and consider the bigger picture.

The platform and the way we work are evolving rapidly. You’ll have the opportunity to help shape standards, clarify responsibilities and introduce reusable engineering practices. This means that:

  • You create structure where it is still needed.
  • You are comfortable working with changing priorities and, at times, evolving frameworks.
  • You enjoy improving the way things are organised and introducing greater standardisation.

The team culture is open, technically strong and focused on collaboration and knowledge sharing.

What we expect from you

You are a mid to senior level DevOps Engineer. You are comfortable taking ownership and making independent decisions.

You communicate clearly, stay structured under pressure and take initiative. You are proactive and continuously improve both yourself and your environment.

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional level
  • Production experience with OpenShift
  • Experience with CI/CD and GitOps practices
  • Strong Linux and infrastructure-automation skills such as Ansible
  • Experience supporting development teams on a shared platform
  • Ability to troubleshoot across applications, pipelines and infrastructure

Strongly preferred

  • OpenShift Virtualization and OpenShift AI with bare-metal GPU nodes
  • ArgoCD, Kutomize, Helm and GitHub Actions
  • Observability using Grafana, Loki, Tempo, Mimir, OpenTelemetry or comparable products
  • Registry (Harbor, Nexus) and Vault solutions
  • Identity and access management such as Keycloak

What this role specifically requires

  • A T-shaped profile with both depth and breadth
  • Comfortable working in a less structured, evolving environment
  • A proactive mindset to introduce structure, standards and improvements
  • The ability to switch between different topics and responsibilities
