Course on the Essentials of Pulsation and Vibration Control PVC in Process Installations

The essentials of pulsation and vibrations control (PVC) in process installations in a two-day course on 8 and 9 April 2024, by TNO Delft.

The PVC course will be organized again by TNO! In a two-day course, you will be introduced to the essentials of pulsation and vibration control in process installations. There are plenary introduction lectures in the morning and parallel sessions in the afternoon on either pulsations/vibrations induced by positive displacement machinery and the API workflow, or flow induced excitation and the AVIFF guidelines. The setup of the PVC course is updated annually to better match your interests.

Course content

The plenary morning sessions guide you through the different sources of dynamic pressure fluctuations in production and process piping, followed by the fundamentals of pressure wave propagation in pipelines. In the afternoon sessions there are two parallel tracks:

  • Positive displacement machinery session (API618 / API674 / API619)

A full afternoon with all there is to know about pulsations generated by reciprocating compressors and pumps, as well as screw compressors, with a clear focus on proper mitigation measures to keep your system safe and reliable. Influences of hydrogen compression are also treated explicitly.

  • Flow induced pulsations/vibrations (AVIFF)

A full afternoon with all there is to know about different forces that the fluid can exert on your pipe systems, as a result of pressure surge, turbocompressor dynamics, flow induced pulsations or multiphase flow phenomena.

The first day will be closed with a lovely dinner in the city center of Delft.

The next day kicks off with plenary sessions that summarize all you need to know about vibrations in pipe systems, fatigue and measuring vibrations. In the afternoon there are again two parallel tracks:

  • Positive displacement machinery session (API618 / API674 / API619)

A full afternoon with an introduction to pulsation control concepts. Different types of workflows for pulsation and mechanical analyses will be demonstrated according to the API618 (reciprocating compressors), API674 (reciprocating pumps) and API619 (screw compressors) standards.

  • Flow induced pulsations/vibrations (AVIFF)

A full afternoon where all the essentials of the AVIFF guidelines are presented. Including the screening on turbulence, flow induced pulsations, acoustic fatigue, cavitation, small branch connections and thermowells.

The second day will end at approximately 16.30, allowing you to travel home at a decent time.

Who should attend?

The course is intended for project engineers in piping and rotating equipment as well as for flow assurance and mechanical engineers who are involved in the design, operation, optimization or maintenance of process installations. Participants from operating companies, engineering contractors and equipment manufacturers are invited. Focus will be on engineering application of the theory. The course and the documentation will be in English.

Yearly, some 25 engineers from operating companies, engineering contractors and equipment manufacturers participate. Participants from the past years include engineers from Shell, Equinor, Total, Engie (GdF-Suez), ExxonMobil, Repsol, NAM, Fluxys, Gasunie, DOW, Yara, Foster Wheeler, CB&I, Fluor, Stork, FMC, SBM, Jacobs, ILF, GE, MAN, Siemens, Hoerbiger, Burckhardt, Howden-Thomassen, GEA, Uraca, Lewa, SIAD and, Wärtsila.

Accomodation, cost & location

  • Support can be offered for hotel arrangements.
  • EUR 1,820.- (including course notes, lunch, drinks and dinner).
  • Early bird reduction of EUR 100.- if registered before 8 March, 2024.
  • No refund for cancellation after 25 March, 2024.
  • Maximum 25 participants.

The workshop will be held at the TNO Location Delft – Leeghwaterstraat 44, which office is located at the University campus of Delft, the Netherlands. The University is at 20 minutes walking distance from the railway station, which has a good, direct connection to Schiphol airport.
