TNO and MBDA, a world leader in the field of complex weapon systems, have signed a new agreement to combine knowledge and engineering expertise in the field of high power Laser Directed Energy Weapons (LDEW). The collaboration focuses on exploring performance improvements and accelerating the maturity of cutting edge laser technologies for future defence applications.

‘This agreement reflects our ambition to ensure a prominent Dutch position in a strong European capability in leading edge directed energy technologies. MBDA’s experience with DragonFire combined with TNO’s adaptive optics technology is an excellent way to advance Dutch defence and industrial capabilities.’

The role of TNO and MBDA

As the Netherlands’ leading independent applied research organisation, TNO works at the intersection of government, academia, and industry to translate advanced technologies into practical innovations that strengthen Dutch security and support those who serve and protect. Within TNO, the Defence, Safety & Security unit develops solutions for the Dutch Armed Forces, national security partners, and allied nations.

MBDA brings extensive experience as a European champion in LDEW, where the company is, in the UK, the lead system integrator for DragonFire, which is planned for integration on the UK Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers. As part of its strategy to provide both the sword and the shield to European defence, MBDA has also played a central role in laser weapon developments across France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

European collaboration

MBDA has consistently emphasised the importance of European collaboration in laser weapon development. This agreement between TNO and MBDA represents another concrete step in that direction and illustrates how shared expertise can accelerate progress across national programmes.
