SkiesFifty, a global investor in sustainable aviation, and TNO, the Netherlands' independent applied research organisation, have signed an agreement to collaborate on strengthening the technical foundation of investment decisions in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Under the agreement, TNO will provide independent technical assessments, techno-economic analyses and system-level insights across the SAF value chain. The collaboration aims to support well-informed investment decisions and contribute to the responsible scaling of sustainable fuels for aviation.

An initial phase of work will start shortly, with the intention to further develop a multi-year collaboration. The SAF market is developing rapidly and is highly complex, involving a wide range of technologies, feedstocks and production pathways. Assessing these options requires integrated and independent insight.

'This collaboration reflects TNO’s role in supporting the energy transition with independent and scientifically grounded insights. By contributing our knowledge to the assessment of SAF technologies and the value chain, we aim to support robust and well-informed decision-making.'

Multi-year collaboration with partners in and outside aviation

This collaboration reflects the growing need for rigorous, transparent and evidence-based analysis when making investment decisions, to better understand technological performance, system implications and associated risks.

TNO’s applied research capabilities will be used to support such assessments, augmenting SkiesFifty’s own deep technical knowledge in its investment process. By linking scientific expertise with investment practice, the collaboration aims to improve the quality of decision-making in a complex and evolving market.

For TNO, the collaboration fits within its broader role of contributing to the energy transition by providing independent knowledge and insights that help stakeholders make well-founded choices. For SkiesFifty, it reaffirms a commitment to bring the best coalition of partners together – from inside and outside aviation - to catalyse the mass production of green fuel over the next five to ten years.

'The transition to sustainable aviation is a generational challenge. Getting capital to the right technologies with speed and conviction is what will determine success,' said Krishnan Narayanan, Chairman of SkiesFifty. 'By bringing TNO's world-class science to inform how we invest, we are building the strongest ecosystem of partners to drive the highest-quality scale-up of the SAF industry possible. '
