TNO showcases media technology at International Broadcast Convention

Amsterdam | RAI • 15 Sep 2017 - 19 Sep 2017

The International Broadcast Convention (IBC) is the world's leading media, entertainment and technology show. It is the most influential annual event for professionals engaged in the creation, management and delivery of electronic media, worldwide. At IBC2017, TNO showcases its media expertise and technologies at a variety of events.

The Conference

We present our work at the renowned IBC Conference, with three papers:
1. With the uptake of VR, an emerging challenge is the creation of convincing multi-user social VR experiences. Social VR is a key research area for TNO and we have recently developed TogetherVR; this framework allows for creating social VR experiences in which users see each other while watching a video, playing a game or having a teleconference in VR. Senior Consultant Martin Prins will give a presentation on “Creating Social VR Experiences”; he will present the framework, share insights and discuss how web-technologies can be used to easily and rapidly test and evaluate multi-user VR experiences.
IBC Session: “VR and AR - the production, the potential and the pitfalls”. Friday, September 15, 11:30-13:00

2. The proliferation of new capabilities in affordable smart devices capable of capturing, processing and rendering audio-visual media content triggers a need for coordination and orchestration between these devices and their capabilities, and of the content flowing from and to such devices. The upcoming MPEG Media Orchestration standard (“MORE”, ISO/IEC 23001-13) enables the temporal and spatial orchestration of multiple media and metadata streams. In his presentation “Media Orchestration Between Streams and Devices via New MPEG Timed Metadata”, senior scientist Oskar van Deventer will update the audience on the status of the MORE standard.
IBC Session: “Novel ideas and cutting edge technologies”. Sunday, September 17, 10:15-11:45

3. Principal consultant Rob Koenen is involved in the IBC conference in various roles; as co-author of the joint paper “CDN Optimization For VR Streaming” with TNO spin-off Tiledmedia; as chairman for the conference session “VR and AR - the production, the potential and the pitfalls” already mentioned above, and, in his role as VR Industry Forum President, with a talk on VRIF activities at the IBC Future Reality Theatre. Monday, Sept 18, 15:25.

The Exhibition

Together with our partners, we showcase our latest technological advances during the Exhibition:

  • Together with strategic partner KPN, TNO is co-organising an invite-only demonstration of a prototype operator app. The app has been designed according to the draft HBBTV Operator Applications specification. This demo for a group of European operators will show how IPTV can be delivered direct to the TV based on standardised components. The demo takes place on Monday, September 18, afternoon. More information? Contact Teun van der Veen.
  • TNO is an active UHD Forum member and regular participant in UHD Forum plugfests. The UHD Forum will showcase the world’s first UHD HDR-enabled TV stream based on the UHD Forum’s Phase A Guidelines at the EBU stand Hal 10, F20. TNO is working in its MediaLab with KPN and its partners Basmedia and United to demonstrate that it is possible to bring HDR content to the TV screen over a live IPTV network. To know more, contact Teun van der Veen.
  • TNO and LiveArenA, a key global player in the creation and delivery of live and on-demand traditional TV channels to any device anywhere at any time, are announcing their intention to establish a partnership. This partnership, through which LiveArena aims to use TNO Sport and Media technology, will allow them to strengthen their position and to lead the next generation automated broadcast production for live events. LiveArena features as a Microsoft partner in Hall 15, MS 1. Meet us for more information or contact Paul Valk.

The Future Zone

TNO is coordinating the ITEA3 project ‘Media Orchestration from Sensor to Screen (MOS2S)’, where we collaborate with Dutch companies such as the Amsterdam ArenA, Bosch, Game On, Inmotio Object Tracking and KPN, as well as with Belgian partners Kiswe, Nokia and VRT, and Korean partners ETRI, Mooovr and Samsung. On our MOS2S booth at the IBC Future Zone, we demonstrate new technology which provides for an enriched experience for TV viewers and stadium visitors during live events, such as football matches and concerts. We showcase applications that make it possible for TV viewers and stadium visitors to receive additional information live during soccer games; both on the TV screen at home and on their smartphone or tablet. You can find TNO and the MOS2S project partners in Hall 8, stand G06. To know more, please contact us at info@mos2s.eu.
