As an Scientist Human AI Collaboration you have a significant share in applied research on human-centered artificial intelligence in the Defence, Safety, and Security domain. It is your mission to optimize collaboration between humans and AI systems. This is accomplished by your input in research projects with the topic of human-machine teaming and requires your mix of skills in conceptual design, technical development and evaluation. The latter is often done in close cooperation with end users. Your work will strongly impact our (future) society and let you dive into worlds that normally would remain off limits. How should you task a team of humans and intelligent systems effectively in a time critical situation? How could a robotic system operate safely in an open world? How should a system provide transparency to other team members about its decision making? And, even more interesting: your input will give direction to the route to improvement. As our Scientist Human AI Collaboration, you develop the concepts and technology that will raise the bar of the next-generation systems used by defense and safety domains, today and in the years to come.
In our research projects you will work in a multi-disciplinary team on technical-scientific research and development, focused on concrete real-world issues. Together with your colleagues, you will interview end users and participate in workshops with the stakeholders to capture their needs and identify room for improvement. Sometimes the best course of action affords the design of a new human-robot-collaboration concept, whereas another requires you and your team to develop and integrate a specific solution that incorporates explainable AI, foundation models or meaningful human control. In order to implement the acquired knowledge, you formalize functional requirements to ensure the system fits the user’s needs. By using your programming skills you and your team work towards an integrated prototype that can be tested with end users out in the field, or in one of our advanced and immersive lab facilities. Examples of these facilities are the Immersive Collaboration Lab, that includes a multi-user VR simulations and the Human-Vehicle Interaction Experience Lab, that consists of military vehicles placed in a 180-degree projected simulation environment. During this development process you closely monitor the outcomes and make sure they are in line with the interests of end users.
You will work together with team members from a variety of disciplines like AI Researchers, Engineers, Cognitive Psychologists and Interaction Designers. Solutions that you and your team members develop are never ‘basic’ or standard off-the-shelf. Often, you contribute to the birth of completely new models or new a combination of technologies that will change the future of human-AI teaming. This requires thorough research and means your path in work will never be predictable. On top of that, you have the freedom to complement these activities and decide on your own development path.
