Artificial Intelligence (AI) concerns the ability of machines to demonstrate intelligent behaviour. AI is set to transform the way in which we live, work and travel. It will help us improve the competitiveness of Dutch industry and develop innovative solutions which will keep us healthy and safe. The big challenge is to bring AI expertise and domain knowledge together. And that is our strength: we combine different AI technologies with multidisciplinary expertise in order to create responsible system solutions. We do this under the umbrella of Appl.AI (Applied Artificial Intelligence).
Applied Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence has the potential of making our society smart and even wise. But trusted and responsible application strongly rests on public-private partnerships. TNO connects people and knowledge in AI, join us!
We put AI to work in the real world. AI applications require large-scale data sharing and a combination of extensive domain knowledge with highly multidisciplinary expertise. Value creation with AI transcends organisational boundaries. It changes interactions and business models for public and private stakeholders. That’s why we believe that joint innovation is a key element of AI’s application. We have therefore set up Appl.AI: our initiative to stimulate AI innovation by bringing governments, companies and researchers together in joint innovation projects. We also build on TNO’s long track record of innovation.
The mission of Appl.AI is to strengthen the competitiveness of industry and overcome societal challenges. Orchestrating innovation in public-private partnerships is one of our strengths. This is why we are teaming up with new partners, investing in new AI techniques and deploying these techniques in a range of applications. Our approach is people-centric, developing AI solutions in a controllable, explainable and responsible manner. We also create the right legal and ethical frameworks, so that AI can truly contribute to the improvement of our society and economy.
We are working on AI applications to realise the following goals:
At TNO we address the key challenges that prevent real-world applications of AI. We co-invest 80 million euros over 5 years in re-usable generic methodologies, techniques and tooling. Our 150 researchers (including 10 AI professors), work together with universities and international research organisations from a wide range of backgrounds. The key challenges we address include: complying with AI ethics; coping with small datasets; sharing data; human-machine teaming; and providing fairness, transparency and trustworthiness.
TNO is leading projects and innovation programmes in a responsible manner. If you are interested in realizing the potential of AI, you can contact us. Together we can experiment with new AI applications, either in single projects or in joined innovation programmes.
