Aromatics, the chemical ingredients needed to make products like plastics, textiles and paints, can currently only be extracted from petroleum. But that’s about to change. TNO has successfully created special aromatics from agricultural waste streams and demonstrated that they work in the lab. The next phase will involve putting the method into practice. Major producers of paints and lubricants are interested in this breakthrough because they can use bio-aromatics to improve the quality, stability and lifetime of their products. Bio-based aromatics are pretty much the only option available for manufacturers of hard-to-recycle products who want make their products more sustainable. The start-up company Relement is focussing primarily on this category of special chemical products because of their high added value and because it believes bio-aromatics are an important step towards 100% fossil-free products.
