Two teams of 5 players play a match, the object of which is to enclose enemy players within 150-metre equilateral triangles formed by three team members. The team's score is equal to the number of enemy players it has enclosed. Triangler uses advanced mobile location and communication services to facilitate optimum co-ordination between team members. The winning team is the team that scores the most points. Triangler is not intended purely for entertainment.
The strategic, tactical and operational co-ordination skills that the game requires means that it is highly suitable for other purposes such as large-scale training programmes for disaster workers. TNO's research on gaming focuses on two aspects, namely the use of serious gaming for the purpose of training and crisis response (e.g. by the Ministry of Defence) and, secondly, the development of underlying technologies with a broader application that are very useful to game developers. Examples are GPS-based location services, presence and mobile group-communication services. TNO is one of the three partners in the Center for Advanced Gaming and Simulation.
