Internship | Fabrication and Testing of Battery Electrodes Using Novel Binders

About this position

The state-of-the-art lithium ion batteries still rely on conventional electrode architecture, containing a blend of active materials, polymeric binders and conductive additives on a current collector. However, the current production methods face challenges due to environmental concerns associated with the use of fluorinated polymers and toxic organic solvents. At TNO, we work on developing alternative polymeric binders that can be processed under a more environmentally friendly conditions.

What will be your role?

In this internship, you will work on electrode processing using fluorine-free polymer binders and evaluate its electrochemical performance in lithium-ion battery cells. Your day-to-day activities will involve preparing electrode films through slurry casting and test their electrochemical performance in coin cells under industrially relevant conditions. Under guidance of TNO, you will propose solutions to optimize the slurry properties, film production process, and performance.

Minimum project duration is 4 months, longer is possible if preferred by the candidate. A more detailed plan will be drafted together with your academic supervisor. At TNO, you will work in Holst Center and in the Materials Solutions Department in Eindhoven

What we expect from you

  • You are a master's student in the final phase of your studies in a relevant field (chemistry, electrochemistry, physics, or materials science);
  • Prior experience in a chemistry lab and hands-on skills are preferable;
  • Knowledge in battery technologies is a plus;
  • Proactive and a good team player;
  • Good communication skills in English are expected.
