Consultant Building Materials

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a consultant building materials at TNO in Delft!

About this position

Do you want to contribute to sustainable construction in a circular society? You can, by becoming a Building Materials Consultant at TNO in Delft! Concrete and other stony building materials play an important role in our society. Longer-lasting concrete with less environmental impact contributes significantly to making the construction industry and society as a whole more sustainable. At TNO, we work on making concrete structures more sustainable from three perspectives: materials, structural behaviour, and reliability.

What will be your role?

The Building Materials team within the Building Materials & Structures (BMS) department focuses on the development and performance of alternative binders and concrete mixtures, recycling and reuse of stony materials and complete (precast) concrete elements, and the preservation of existing buildings and structures. The team is looking for an enthusiastic applied scientist to work as a consultant and integrator, not only initiating and coordinating new projects in terms of content but also co-executing them. Connecting different scientific disciplines as well as knowledge and practical experience from the sector is central to this. You base this on strong substantive knowledge at the interface of concrete and concrete structures.

You’ll be joining a team that specialises in developing and assessing stony building materials. The team has a strong focus on making concrete more sustainable. To this end, we work closely with both our colleagues in construction, reliability, environmental science, and life cycle analysis, as well as construction in practice. This requires an approach and attitude that is very focused on curiosity, listening, and asking questions, and then combining the insights gained with your own to come up with new ideas, innovations, projects, and partnerships.

What we expect from you

You are open-minded, enjoy going off the beaten track, and feel comfortable in a multidisciplinary and multinational team. You seek connections with experts within TNO and beyond and make scientific knowledge applicable.
Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A master's degree in a relevant materials science discipline, e.g., civil engineering, structural engineering or a related engineering or natural science degree with a demonstrable interest in construction and building materials and at least 5 years similar experience.
  • A good eye for sustainability and circularity.
  • You know how to balance applied scientific research with the pragmatism of construction.
  • Demonstrated competencies in project initiation and a relevant network in this field in the Netherlands.
  • Good active command of both written and spoken Dutch and English at entry is essential; knowledge of German is recommended.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
  • An employer that values and encourages diverse talent, with initiatives like the Female Leadership Program, our Rainbow Community and round tables on inclusion topics.
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.

  • A good pension scheme.
