Experienced energy systems scientist/consultant

The research group Energy Transition Studies focuses on analysing technological, economic and societal challenges of the transition to a climate-neutral energy system. Using national, European and global integrated energy system models, we explore various transition paths by means of scenarios and examine their consequences for greenhouse gas emissions, resource use, land use, economy, etc., among other things. By doing so, we give policy makers and decision makers insight into possible choices and their consequences.

As an energy systems scientist/consultant you will lead research and consultancy projects. These projects focus on techno-economic, societal and policy questions related to the energy transition on a national and international scale. You will make your own substansive contributions to the research and consultancy projects. You develop innovative approaches and quantitative methods for performing the analyses. 

You collect research questions from policymakers and other stakeholders in the energy transition and ensure dissemination of the accumulated knowledge to these target groups. Together with colleagues, you will advise these policy makers and market players implementing the energy transition.

You develop project proposals for national and international research programmes and consultancy assignments for ministries and other parties involved in the energy transition.

You initiate collaboration with other scientists, often in interdisciplinary teams, focusing on application-oriented issues of governments and other parties involved in the energy transition. You perform work in both a national and international context. You work together with colleagues from other TNO units and with various parties from society, such as universities, consultants, research institutes and companies.

You have affinity with the energy domain and you enjoy working in a multidisciplinary, multinational, and gender-balanced team. You have an open mindset, value learning from your colleagues, and actively share knowledge within the team. You are capable of thinking from the perspective of customers. You are able to write and get project proposals commissioned and can demonstrate this. You have a network within the field, and you enjoy maintaining and expanding this. You have experience in guiding stakeholder processes and substantively managing a research team. 

Other skills and knowledge you bring to TNO:

• You have an academic degree in technology or natural sciences, preferably completed with a PhD.
• You have more than 10 years of experience in research and consulting on energy issues.
• You have extensive experience in energy system modelling, developing energy scenarios and how to apply these methods effectively.
• Your oral and written skills in English are excellent, a high level of Dutch is a plus as we work a lot for Dutch stakeholders.
