Data Scientist Air Quality and Climate

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Data Scientist at TNO in Petten!

What will be your role?

Introduction
Climate change, air quality and energy transition play a significant role in shaping, implementing, and monitoring policy. To develop effective policies, it is essential to gain insights into emissions and concentrations of gases and substances, both at regional and national levels, ideally in real-time.

Within the department Environmental Modelling, Sensing & Analysis (EMSA), we utilize various measurement equipment and sensor networks to monitor concentrations and compositions of various gases and particles in the atmosphere. Are you able to analyze this data as a data scientist, providing the TNO team and Dutch society with the necessary insights?

What will you be doing?
You will be responsible for processing large volumes of measurement data and uncovering new insights from this data. You will consider the physical and chemical background in which this data is gathered and be adept at working with data that have spatial and temporal dimensions. Your insights will be well-founded based on the data, and you will document the algorithms used in a way that allows others to build upon them.

You won't be working alone; you'll collaborate with a team of dedicated experts, technicians, and software engineers. In our team, we have various high-end measurement devices for assessing nitrogen, particulate matter, and air pollution. Additionally, we have several sensor networks. We frequently utilize data from these sources to gather relevant insights for businesses, municipalities, provinces, and the government. To perform your work effectively, you will be in the office in Petten 2 to 3 days per week.

What we expect from you

You are curious, organized, and adept at making connections. You strive for results, ask critical questions, and simultaneously consider the desires and ideas of those around you. If one door closes, you open another. You think in terms of possibilities but also know when a solution is good enough and are focused on meeting deadlines. You understand that the information and outcomes can sometimes be sensitive, so you handle them confidentially. You can articulate yourself well, convey your message to various audiences, and enjoy gathering socially relevant insights from unique datasets.

You have:

  • At least a university-level education in the field of beta sciences, such as (applied) mathematics, physics, chemistry, or environmental sciences.
  • Some experience in programming in Python and processing data with a temporal and/or spatial dimension. Experience with Azure, CI/CD, databases, data assimilation, artificial intelligence, and/or modeling is a plus.
  • The ability to quickly become familiar with research methods used in atmospheric sciences and an interest in learning new data science and/or machine learning techniques.
  • Affinity with air quality, climate, and/or the environment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English. Dutch is a plus.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3.200,- and € 5.700,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180).
