Experienced scientist organic electrosynthesis | Rijswijk

Want to make your mark on our time? Become an Experienced scientist organic electrosynthesis at TNO in Rijswijk!

About this position

The energy sector and (chemical) industry are in a transition to sustainable operations. There is increasing use of new raw materials and renewable energy, process and energy efficiency, carbon circularity and carbon capture and reuse. The Sustainable Process & Energy Systems department is working on these transition themes. We do this together with industry, academia and government, with the aim of accelerating the development and implementation of new technologies.

What will be your role?

You will work as an experienced scientist in a department dealing with gas treatment and conversion, separation technologies, synthesis of bio-based building blocks, electrochemistry and energy conversion and storage. We work for- and with sustainable energy and chemical companies and in a network of international knowledge partners. With your expertise in electrochemical engineering and organic electro synthesis, you will work with the Voltachem team on numerous projects in the field of electrification and Power-2-Chemicals. For example, you will be involved in scaling up electrochemical processes for the production of fine & bulk chemicals, designing and modelling electrochemical reactors and testing these reactors. You will test different concepts, electrodes and materials. You are also involved in stack design and development, supporting the construction of demonstration setups and lab scale electrolyte testing, process design and optimization, and working with academia. Finally, you contribute to the development of new projects for customers and in international consortia.

Want to know more about the projects we do? Then read about Voltachem (Power-2-Chemicals), the PERFORM-project, Biomass Valorization or our development and piloting of carbon capture and carbon (re)use technology.

What we expect from you

You understand the context of the (chemical) industry, the transition this industry needs to go through to become sustainable and the role electrochemical technology will play in that transition. You have the drive to develop innovative solutions to these technically challenging problems with the right mix of intellectual curiosity and a pragmatic approach. As such, you understand the challenges of developing technology that needs to scale from low to high Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) in this complex environment. You have experience working in a lab and enjoy mentoring others. You enjoy working for and with customers (internal and external). You are able to quickly understand the needs of customers and external stakeholders and proactively come up with plans to improve their technologies and processes.

What else do you bring?

  • You have a PhD in electrochemistry, with experience in organic chemistry, process technology, chemical engineering;
  • You have at least 3 years of relevant experience in electrochemistry after your PhD;
  • Solid knowledge in the field of organic chemistry and catalysis;
  • Be familiar with sustainable organic electrosynthesis (methods, mechanisms, and technology), such as surface modification of electrodes, upscaling electrochemical processes;
  • Solid knowledge in analytical techniques including NMR, gas, liquid and thin layer chromatography, infrared, UV-Vis, spectroelectrochemistry, titration;
  • Have a broad vision on the application of different electricity driven technologies (electrocatalysis, electroseparations);
