Researcher Inorganic Materials & Coatings | Geleen

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Researcher Inorganic Materials & Coatings at TNO in Geleen!

What will be your role?

Within the research group ‘Materials Solutions’, we develop inorganic materials and coatings for applications in photochemical and photoelectrochemical processes, as well as in windows and solar panels. The materials we develop for photochemical processes enable the sustainable, sunlight-powered conversion of the unwanted greenhouse gas CO2 to platform chemicals and fuels such as syngas and methanol. The photoelectrochemical materials and coatings are applied in devices similar to solar panels systems that produce green hydrogen instead of electricity. For application in windows, we produce so-called smart coatings and pigments that can switch between transmission and blocking of solar heat radiation based on the window’s temperature. This results in substantially lower indoor temperatures in summer and reduction of energy consumption for heating and cooling of houses and non-residential buildings. Furthermore, we work on materials and coatings that facilitate the re-use of glass plates from old windows for the production of new ones (circular economy). For solar panels, we develop materials and coating that improve the aesthetics of building integrated PV panels (e.g., coloured coatings) or the panel’s efficiency/lifetime (e.g., coatings that avoid unnecessary heat up of PV panels in summer). The development of materials and coatings for smart windows and photovoltaics are part of the Sustainable Buildings program of Brightlands Materials Center (Brightlands Materials Center- BMC) Your primary workplace will be at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen. For the work on photo(electrochemical) materials, intense collaboration with researchers and scientists at the TNO location at the High-Tech Campus in Eindhoven is required. We expect you to work in Eindhoven for approximately one day every two weeks.

  • Conducting Lab and pilot scale chemical synthesis of metal oxides and metal particles.
  • Characterization of metal oxide and metal particles to determine e.g., size, shape, chemical composition, crystallinity and functional properties. Commonly applied characterization techniques are thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometry, laser diffraction, dynamic light scattering and electron microscopy.
  • Integrating materials into high-tech systems and devices, and operating those.
  • Reporting of research results in form of presentations or written project reports.
  • Collaborating proactively with other members of project teams to realize the targeted project results.
  • Contributing to the BMC program ‘Sustainable Buildings’ and the TNO programs active in sunlight-powered chemical processes.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Excellent execution of materials preparation, characterization, system integration and functional performance testing.
  • Communication with colleagues on scientific progress and project results.
  • Alignment with colleagues who need your materials, e.g., for application in coatings for smart windows or as catalysts in sunlight-powered methanol production.

What we expect from you

  • A bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of expressing complex information clearly and concisely in both Dutch and English.
  • A proactive approach to project involvement, with a passion for advancing inorganic material technologies.
